SHENZHEN traffic police launched a citywide action against traffic violations, especially targeting pedestrians walking against red lights and illegally using motorist lanes, Thursday.
More than 10,000 police officers were deployed to more than 1,000 intersections to check for violations by pedestrians and non-motorized vehicles.
In the action Thursday, 512 pedestrians were caught for traffic violations. They included 274 people who ran red lights and 15 people who entered motorist lanes illegally.
The violators were either fined or instructed to offer voluntary traffic guidance service, copy down traffic rules or watch traffic education movies. The information on the violators would be sent to work stations in communities.
During the checks, police also inspected traffic facilities, fences, road signs and cameras and made corrections and improvements to the facilities.
Zombie cars left unattended on the streets were towed away.
So far this year, 144 people were killed and 459 were injured in accidents involving pedestrians and motorized vehicles.
