Shenzhen will take the lead in piloting commercial 5G networks this year with a total of 1,955 5G base stations expected to be built and 851,000 new users to be connected with fiber Internet with a speed of 100Mbps or higher, according to a report in the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily, citing a source from the city’s industry and information bureau.
The city is now implementing an innovation-driven development strategy and aiming to build a stronger manufacturing as well as intelligent economic city.
In order to achieve the goal, Shenzhen is now speeding up the construction of information infrastructure, especially high-speed broadband network, advanced Internet of Things, intelligent connected vehicles and other new types of infrastructure, according to a staffer at the bureau.
The pilot program has been included in a working plan of the construction of 5G base stations (2018-2019). As of 2019, a small-scale connected network will be achieved based on the plan. Additionally, the city will promote the coverage and service quality of free WLAN in public areas, and the construction of unified authentication platforms for WLAN in public areas, to provide a unified, standardized, safe and convenient WLAN service to the public.
Moreover, an action plan will be issued to promote the quality of mobile communication networks and mobile network signals.
One of the key parts of the city to support manufacturing is to grasp the 5G market and become a model city in 5G technology, the report said.
Taking full advantage of the benefits from constructing the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Shenzhen aims to facilitate interconnection of information infrastructure in the area, create a new generation of mobile communication, Internet and broadcast network, and explore special channels for international data.
